Music and the Movies I: How the Soundtracks We Love Bring Movies to Life

ROBIN HOOD SOUNDTRACK.jpg

Music for film, television, and video games occupies a unique position as  being the only performed music which (some say) is not intended to be  heard!  From classic of the Golden Age like King Kong (music by Max Steiner) to  The Adventures of Robin Hood (music by Erich Wolfgang Korngold) to  modern hits Out of Africa (music by John Berry) and Jaws (music by John  Williams) and more, this session will explore the role of music in the  cinema and how composers create artistically effective and enjoyable  soundtracks.

Location:  CLE Lecture Hall

Presenter: Scott Stewart is the Music Director and Conductor of the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony.  He holds Bachelor of Music Education and Doctor of Music degrees from Indiana University and a Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Texas at Austin.  He has served as Director of Wind Studies at Emory University and on the Instrumental Conducting Faculty at the Westminster Schools (Atlanta, GA).  He specializes in wind band/ensemble, symphony orchestra, conducting, and film music.

Music and the Movies II: Classic Hollywood Soundtracks from Robin Hood to Star Wars

GONE WITH THE WIND SOUNDTRACK.jpeg

The Golden Age of Hollywood produced movie classics like Gone With  The Wind, The Wizard of Oz, and Citizen Kane. Music was a huge part of  their success and influenced generations of composers. This session illustrates the connections between music of cinema’s Golden Age of the 1930s and the return of the Hollywood symphonic soundtrack  with clips from:

  • Gone with the Wind (Max Steiner)

  • The Adventures of Robin Hood (Erich Wolfgang Korngold)

  • A Streetcar Named Desire (Alex North)

  • Psycho (Bernard Herrmann)

  • Star Wars ET, Hook (John Williams)

  • The Lord of the Rings (Howard Shore)

  • The Incredibles (Michael Giacchino)

Music soundtracks and movie clips will abound in this interactive  presentation!
